Only 3 Choices

I recently had the opportunity to speak with a group of Integrators about a variety of things. Many of them told me about issues they were having with their Visionary that were really difficult. These ran the gamut – everything from Visionaries doing End Runs, to Visionaries not committing to getting on the same page, to a lack of mutual respect . There many different issues but when you boil it down there are really only three choices to resolve these difficult situations. Let’s walk through them.

The first choice to tolerate the situation. You can accept that it won’t change and tolerate it. When I spoke to these Integrators and asked what they’d done to try to fix the issue, many had not yet put it on the table with their Visionary. They were tolerating it by default. That might happen by accident but I don’t want you to do it unconsciously. Don’t put up with something that’s not right. However, if you do choose to tolerate it, please spare the rest of us. Don’t complain. That’s your choice. Don’t drag the rest of us through your discomfort.

If you don’t want to tolerate the issue, the second choice is to change or fix it. If you’re going to change or fix an issue, you must put it on the table with your Visionary. You’ve got to talk it through. Make an effort to understand them. They should make the same effort with you. Initiate the kind of behavior change that will be required to fix this difficult situation. Get things moving back in the same direction.

If your Visionary can’t or doesn’t want to resolve the issue, frankly, your third option is to move on. I hate to see this happen but every once in awhile, there’s a situation that’s been discussed repeatedly, promises made and broken – and it just can’t seem to be fixed. If your counterpart won’t commit, at some point, life is simply too short. It becomes time to move on.

Those are three options for a difficult situation. It’s simple – just not always easy to do.

Let’s recap our three key points:

  1. Understand what’s going on.
  2. Be understood. Put it on the table and decide if you’re going to be able to resolve this. Get a commitment to make that change.
  3. Choose your path and commit to it.
